Fantastic Fours! Let’s Master the 4 Times Table!

Hello Multiplication Stars! Get ready to explore the 4 times table! Knowing your 4s is super helpful for all sorts of maths, and it’s connected to things that come in fours, like the wheels on a car or the legs on your favourite furry friends! We’ve got some cool tricks, including the “double-double” method, to make learning it fun and easy!

What is the 4 Times Table?

The 4 times table is all about counting in groups of four. When you multiply a number by 4, you’re finding the total of that many groups of four.

Here are the facts up to 12×4:

  • 1 × 4 = 4
  • 2 × 4 = 8
  • 3 × 4 = 12
  • 4 × 4 = 16
  • 5 × 4 = 20
  • 6 × 4 = 24
  • 7 × 4 = 28
  • 8 × 4 = 32
  • 9 × 4 = 36
  • 10 × 4 = 40
  • 11 × 4 = 44
  • 12 × 4 = 48

Awesome Tricks for Learning Your 4s!

  • The Double-Double Trick! This is the superstar trick for the 4s! To multiply a number by 4, just double the number, and then double the answer!
    • Example: For 6 × 4:
      • Double 6: 6 + 6 = 12.
      • Now double that answer: 12 + 12 = 24.
      • So, 6 × 4 = 24! Easy!
  • It’s Double the 2 Times Table: If you know your 2 times table, you’re halfway there! The answers in the 4 times table are just double the answers in the 2 times table.
    • Example: You know 3 × 2 = 6. So, 3 × 4 is double that: 6 + 6 = 12.
  • Count in Fours: Practice chanting: 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24, 28, 32, 36, 40, 44, 48. March around or tap your feet as you say them!
  • Pattern Spotting: All the answers in the 4 times table are even numbers. The ones digits follow a pattern: 4, 8, 2, 6, 0, and then it repeats (4, 8, 2, 6, 0…).
  • Songs and Rhymes: Look up “4 times table songs” online – music can make learning so much fun!

Practice Your 4 Times Table Power! (18 Questions)

Time to show how well you know your fantastic fours! Here are 18 quick questions. Try using the “double-double” trick or thinking about your 2 times table to help you recall the answers.

(Your web app with the 18 questions will go here. Questions should be recall-based, like “7 x 4 = ?”, “? x 4 = 36”, or “What is 4 multiplied by 5?”.)

Why is Knowing Your 4 Times Table So Brilliant?

  • Speeds Up Your Maths: Quick recall helps you solve multiplication problems much faster.
  • Unlocks Division by 4: If you know 4 × 6 = 24, you also know 24 ÷ 4 = 6! (They’re inverse operations!)
  • Helps with More Advanced Maths: You’ll use your times tables for area, fractions, and bigger calculations.
  • Builds Maths Confidence: Every times table you master makes you feel more like a maths superstar!

Tips for Grown-Ups: Making 4 Times Table Practice Engaging!

The “double-double” strategy is often very effective for the 4 times table. Making connections to the 2 times table also helps.

  • Emphasise “Double-Double”: Constantly remind them of this trick. If they know how to double, they can learn their 4s.
  • Use Real-Life Fours: Point out groups of four: “How many legs on 3 dogs?” “If we buy 5 packs of 4 yoghurts, how many yoghurts is that?”
  • Flashcard Fun: Use flashcards for quick recall practice. Make it a game!
  • Times Table Games: There are many online games, board games, and apps that make practicing fun.
  • Relate to the 2s: “You know 7 × 2 is 14. So what’s 7 × 4? (Double 14!)”
  • Short, Regular Practice: Little and often is better than one long session.
