Threesy Peasy! Let’s Master the 3 Times Table!

Hello Multiplication Explorers! Are you ready to learn a super useful and fun times table? Today, it’s all about the 3 times table! Knowing your 3s will help you solve all sorts of maths problems quickly and easily. And guess what? Learning it can be “Threesy Peasy” with a few cool tricks!

What is the 3 Times Table?

The 3 times table is just like counting in groups of three! When you multiply a number by 3, you’re finding the total of that many groups of three.

Here are the facts up to 12×3:

  • 1 × 3 = 3
  • 2 × 3 = 6
  • 3 × 3 = 9
  • 4 × 3 = 12
  • 5 × 3 = 15
  • 6 × 3 = 18
  • 7 × 3 = 21
  • 8 × 3 = 24
  • 9 × 3 = 27
  • 10 × 3 = 30
  • 11 × 3 = 33
  • 12 × 3 = 36

Tips and Tricks for Learning Your 3s!

  • Count in Threes: Practice chanting: 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21, 24, 27, 30, 33, 36. You can even clap or jump as you say them!
  • Double and Add One More Group: For any number multiplied by 3, you can double the number, then add the number to that result. For example, for 7 × 3:
    • Double 7: 7 + 7 = 14.
    • Add 7 again: 14 + 7 = 21. So, 7 × 3 = 21!
  • Pattern Spotting: Look at the answers: 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21, 24, 27, 30… Notice how the ones digits go in a pattern (3, 6, 9, 2, 5, 8, 1, 4, 7, 0… and then it repeats!). Also, the answers alternate ODD, EVEN, ODD, EVEN… (3 is odd, 6 is even, 9 is odd, 12 is even).
  • Use Your Fingers (for a start!): For smaller numbers, you can count on your fingers in groups of three.
  • Songs and Rhymes: Search online for “3 times table songs” – singing can make facts stick in your head!

(Your web app with the 18 questions will go here. Questions should be recall-based, like “6 x 3 = ?”, “? x 3 = 24”, or “What is 3 multiplied by 9?”.)

Why is Knowing Your 3 Times Table So Useful?

  • Faster Calculations: It helps you solve multiplication problems much more quickly.
  • Helps with Division: Knowing 3 × 4 = 12 also means you know 12 ÷ 3 = 4 and 12 ÷ 4 = 3! (Inverse operations!)

  • Builds Maths Confidence: Knowing your times tables well makes all maths feel a bit easier!

Tips for Grown-Ups: Making 3 Times Table Practice Fun!

Helping children recall their multiplication facts is key to their mathematical development. For the 3 times table, consistent, engaging practice is effective.

  • Quick Fire Questions: Ask random 3 times table questions at odd moments – in the car, during dinner, etc.
  • Use Flashcards: Create or buy flashcards for visual practice.
  • Play Games: Look for times table board games, card games, or online interactive games focusing on the 3s.
  • Look for Real-Life Threes: How many wheels on 4 tricycles? If 3 friends each have 5 sweets, how many altogether?
  • Focus on a Few Facts at a Time: Don’t try to learn them all at once. Master a few, then add a few more.
  • Praise Effort and Progress: Learning times tables takes time and effort. Celebrate their achievements!
